How a seed becomes a harvest

Germination is simple once you know what each stage needs. Here is exactly what happens after you press a seed into soil — and what to do at every step.

Sow

Press the seed into moist, warm soil at the depth printed on your packet, then firm it gently.

Sow at twice the depth of the seed's width.

Imbibition

The seed drinks in water, swells and wakes the embryo inside. Nothing shows above ground yet.

Keep soil damp, never waterlogged.

Radicle

The first root breaks the seed coat and anchors downward, hunting for water and minerals.

Do not disturb the soil surface now.

Sprout

The shoot pushes up and the first seed leaves unfold to catch light and start feeding the plant.
